Hi everyone,
Smart move...especially in light of the new USA project.
Sony (which is the parent company for Columbia Records) lost Mariah Carey to
Virgin Records (home of Janet Jackson). It didn't turn out to be that big of
a loss since Carey's movie and CD "Glitter," her first project for Virgin,
was an embarassing flop. But that also means that, with Mariah
gone, Sony is facing a "diva shortage."
However, they do have...on Columbia...Destiny's Child, which is huge and only
getting bigger. They tour constantly, win awards like crazy, and are all over
MTV.
So what's that mean to Seiko? Well, if the USA album comes out on Sony, they
will INSIST that she has access to the best writers and producers in the
business. They know how to sell music. They know how to promote it. In 1985,
Aerosmith...after a career slump...left Columbia and went to Geffen records.
Over the next 8 years and 4 albums their career went back to the top and they
had hit after hit. At the end of their Geffen contract, Sony grabbbed them back
for something like 9 million dollars. They have since done 2 new albums for
Sony and the company just throws buckets of money into promoting them. If Sony
spends HALF the amount of money on a Seiko USA release as they spend on
Destiny's Child, the album will be a guaranteed hit.
It would make no sense whatsoever to sign Seiko to a new contract unless they
had some serious plans to treat her right. And just like the Aerosmith strategy,
they will probably make good use of her legacy. Maybe I should sell them my
slogan from SMF ("20 Years...One Unforgettable Voice")...:-)
The other piece of good news that I hope we will hear is that Seiko will thank
Shinji for his time and they will go their separate ways. Sony is going
to want Ryo Ogura-calibre hits. I think that Shinji has shown us all that he's
capable of, and Seiko needs...and deserves...a lot more (no offense meant to
Shinji-san or fans of the last few albums).
Very interesting stuff.
Best regards,
Mike
